But could it be that you are talking about the "Stateful Navigation"? Are you on the portal version 7.3 or higher?
With the stateful navigation enabled (which it is per default, as far as I know), the portal remembers you last navigation node for a time and will jump back to it, if you come back to the same top level entry point.
You can deactivate it on the "Framework Page Configuration" (Content Administration > Portal Display) pretty easily. Image may be NSFW.
